Living in the Light

Updated: Apr 4

Close-up of a white flower lit by sunlight, with delicate petals and a lively yellow and green center with stamens that radiate outwards. The background is softly blurred, emphasizing the delicate and transparent details of the flower.

If so many people want to live in the Light, if there are so many books about the Light, and if there are so many people speaking about the Light and guiding others to live in the Light, then why are so many people still estranged from the Light? Because this question concerns you too, I invite you to join me and let me guide you through the truths and untruths of this area of life.

All religious, spiritual and esoteric approaches talk about the Light, but under this term, more fog than light often spreads. You too are under the influence of and in contact with light every day in the form of daylight, and you know very well that without this light there would be no life. It is no different with the light of awareness. Without the light of awareness and its inner radiance, the spirit withers and the soul is lost. Light makes things visible and thereby changes your reality and your experience of life.

Only when the flower bud opens

does the inner beauty of the flower

become visible through the light

and a tangible reality for you to experience.

Only when the nectar of the flower drips outward

does the essence of the flower

become visible through the light

and a tangible reality for you to experience.

Only when the flower withers, decays and dies

does the transient nature of life

become visible through the light

and a tangible reality for you to experience.

Three unopened lotus buds emerge from the water, surrounded by green leaves.

That behind the flower bud there is a flower of extraordinary beauty, that behind that beauty there is a delicate golden nectar, and that behind all that beauty there is the truth of impermanence, is of fundamental importance to the human being who sees this with the light that is present, both from within and from without. It is this seeing, through both the physical light and the light of consciousness, that encourages you to develop and grow as you respond to your experiential reality, which is shaped by the power of light.

~ * ~

Without light,

you would not see or understand anything,

you would not discover new things,

and you would not become aware of anything.

Without awareness,

you would not change and evolve.

Without change,

that which you are

would not be able to unfold, develop and blossom.

Without blossoming,

that which lies behind “what you are now”

will not emerge.

Without that which lies beneath the surface being able to emerge,

you will not know your full truth.

Without knowing your full truth,

you will not realize your true value.

Without experiencing your true value,

you will respond and react inadequately to yourself and others.

Without responding adequately to yourself, others and life,

you will neglect to share the related feeling of affection and love.

Without this essential quality of life coming into the light,

life remains unfulfilling.

Without fulfillment,

life does not feel valuable.

Without a sense of value,

life seems meaningless.

Without meaning,

you live in the dark

and miss the light.

Without light,

you stand still

and die spiritually.

So why don’t you usually live in the light? This question should really be: why don’t you want to see? After all, it is seeing, or rather your reaction to what you see, that makes you shy away. In the dark, you can still hold on to other conceptions of what reality is like, but as soon as the light dawns, you see what reality is really like.

So the question is whether what you see, is what you see fully and completely. In other words, are you seeing with an open mind, or are you seeing from your ego? If you are seeing from your ego, you are only focusing on what you like or don’t like. The ego is no lover of light and insight. It does not like new things that are not already under its control, and it always has difficulty with a reality that is different from what it conceived. The ego has no interest in the revolutionary powers of the light of consciousness and the light of being that emanates from the soul. In such moments, the ego would rather turn off the light and remain in the darkness, so that it can remain preoccupied with the limitations of what it already knows.

However, if you receive what the inner light gives you out of a longing to see with clarity what is real, your seeing becomes a sensitive way of being open. Then seeing is the beginning of you becoming aware of what lies beyond what you already know. Then you are ready to see the unknown flower emerge from the bud, to see the mysterious golden nectar dripping from the fully blossomed flower, to perceive the impermanence of life behind its beauty, to see the deeper light of life shining behind its transience.

A single peach-colored water lily knob floats on a pond surrounded by large green lily leaves. The water reflects the lily and leaves, creating a serene and peaceful scene.

Then you rejoice in being able to walk in the light without stumbling through the opaqueness of darkness. Then your longing gives you the fortitude to face these processes of change and to experience their blessings, even if not every movement is pleasant or comforting for the ego.

When you see with openness and clarity, the light is your friend, and you feel that openness to the light and all that it reveals is an answer to your longing for the essence of life and yourself. It is only by repeatedly receiving, allowing and accepting the Light through openness that your consciousness begins to unfold and expand, allowing what is already present beneath the surface to emerge more and more as the unfolding reality of what you are as a living being.

If you are willing to begin to live with and in this light out of your longing for authenticity, you will discover that from the bud, where you have largely lived in darkness, petals begin to unfold that indicate an immense process of change. As you live with and in this process of change out of your longing for authenticity, you will experience how each part of this process of change allows you to shine more and more like the flower that you truly are. As you live with and in this radiance out of your longing for authenticity, you will feel something essential within you open up and love will flow like nectar from your soul, giving your life profound meaning.

A white water lily blooms on a pond surrounded by green and purple tinted lily leaves. The reflection of the flower is visible on the calm water surface.

Then you feel that following your longing for authenticity gave you the light and led you to the path of awareness and revelation. That the light of awareness has brought you closer and closer to the soul. The soul you once thought you had lost, but which remained unrecognizable in the darkness of your unconscious, of the unknown, of the dormant, due to an absence of light. From that darkness, however, the soul has been sending you signals to awaken to reality.

Signals in the form of your inconsolable longing for authenticity, reality and fulfillment. Signals that gave you the courage to step into the light, despite all the falsehoods and illusions you began to see and recognize. Signals that have encouraged you to befriend the Light and live more intimately with it. Signals from the soul as the essence of the Light within.

To live in the Light is to live in relationship with the inner Light of your soul. Then you recognize all its signals of longing and homesickness as its voice calling you to come closer and allow its healing light into you. Then it doesn’t matter if letting the Light in results in movements that blossom, that allow something within you to flourish or that fill you with its essence. All these movements that come from the inner light always open a deep love within.

White water lilies bloom over large, flat green leaves floating on a pond. Their petals are open and reach up, with a blurry background of more lily leaves and subtle hints of sunlight.

Those who, through all this willingness and its fulfilling revelations, begin to live more and more intimately with the Light, are no longer afraid of the impermanence of their humanity. They feel that all the beauty of life may be impermanent, but that the pure light is always there to catch you again in the purity of existence, in the purity of being. Just as nectar is the tangible essence of the flower, love is the nectar, the essence of the soul.

Only clear light allows us to see all this. All changes arise and pass away in the light. All changes come from it and are supported by it. Clear light is the light that shows us what is there, both around us and within us. Clear light is the light of life that is always there, even when a particular part of the earth or your consciousness has momentarily turned away from it. Clear light is the light of presence. To live in the light is to live in the clear light of presence, it is to live in the clear light of being.
